CHAPTER 9

ATTACK OF THE KILLER SHARKS

The Doctor didn't respond to the Selachian's threat. So long as it waited for an answer, perhaps imagining how it had set the hotel's occupants to panicking, he was earning valuable time.

Of course, it didn't wait long. 'You have ten seconds to agree to our demands and to extend docking facilities to our warcraft. You will do so if you place value on your miserable life.'

He decided to call its bluff. don't imagine my life would be worth much anyway, if I was to accede to the Selachians.'

A pause. Then: 'If you obey us, you will be allowed to keep your life.

Refuse and you will perish.'

'My, don't we have a nice line in pithy dialogue?' the Doctor scoffed.

'Very well. You have sealed your death warrant.'

The implacable pronouncement sent a thrill of fear through his hearts. No, wait!' he cried, but the aliens had broken contact. His gaze shot to the black ship, framed against the stars. A thin protuberance was extended from the base of its nose, almost too small to see from this distance. From this, suddenly, a focused spray of black plasma erupted, its edges rippled by purple fire. It was aimed upward and the hotel trembled as the beam struck its unseen target.

'Oh dear,' the Doctor wailed. 'Oh dear, oh dear.' He felt quite sick.

He held his breath as he punched up damage reports and was relieved to find only the topmost deck affected. The powerful weapon had boiled it away, so quickly and comprehensively that the gyroscope had registered only a slight bump and had compensated handsomely. Had the Selachians aimed at the station's other end -

this end - they would have crippled those same systems and sent it down in flames. Not that the Doctor would have been alive to care.

He hailed the warcraft, stabbing at the controls with all the fury engendered by his foes' reckless stupidity. 'Yes?' acknowledged the voice of their radio operator, tersely.

'That wasn't very clever, was it?' the Doctor blustered. He knew it was the wrong tack to take and he made himself calm down. 'We've found out what you're after, you know, and you're doing your cause no good. The disks are hidden. For all I know, you might just have incinerated them yourself.'

He listened for an answer, but received only static. After a few seconds, he cut the link and settled back with a smile of satisfaction.

He had given them something to think about.

The brief tremor stole Dorothy Adler's footing. She fell backwards, her arms flailing, and the knife pulled up short of Polly's chest. Released from the paralysing terror of impending death, Polly found her voice and screamed. Her attacker regained her balance and charged again, but by now Hayes had recovered. She leapt on the scientist from behind, slipping one arm about her throat and disarming her with the other hand. Dorothy whimpered and struggled, but she was unskilled in combat and Hayes had all the leverage anyway. She flipped Dorothy
